Targeting specific markets is the key to successful affiliate marketing.  Heavy weight affiliates target specific markets rather than casting their nets far and wide.  It is easier to publish content which gets higher rankings for a specific, or niche, market than it is for a broader market.

This is because the competition gets tighter as large sites have already taken the top spots in search engines.  Higher rankings generate more interest and steering your affiliate marketing campaign every which way will not be profitable and will be a huge waste of time.

Specifics

Your keywords have to be able to reach your niche market as being too generic will result in more hits, but possibly less traffic to your site.  Your market needs to be able to find you easily, and you have to provide them the means to do that and this provides you with good quality traffic.

Spend time on researching the niche market that your affiliate marketing program will target.  Planning allows you to target your service or product specifically to the needs of your target audience.  Often your niche will be smaller, but the information you have gleaned about your them will be specific and therefore will be more valuable to your affiliate marketing program.

Your affiliate program should continually develop and upgrade your services with items of interest to your target market.  Your aim is to attract your niche market, keep their attention and result in this group doing business with you.  Once you have a good size traffic base, you can start generating income by carrying ads or links which are of interest to this group.
