About MSN

History of MSN

Many of us know MSN for its Hotmail and Messenger services, but because of the success of these functions MSN has seen a recent rise in the search traffic that it holds.

In the mid 1990s, Microsoft was developing Windows 4.0 which was the last operating system that was created without the Internet features. However Windows 95 included the basic functions.

In 1995, Microsoft launched the Microsoft Network, or MSN. It was integrated into the Windows 95 package and it was seen as just something else you could do with Windows 95. Bill Gates realised that if they didn't act quickly MSN would miss the "Internet Tidal Wave".

For the next couple of years MSN developed itself over and over again before finally releasing their first Web-based version with a custom MSN browser, however not in the distinguishable blue colour we know today, but in black and red.

Microsoft purchased Hotmail in 1997 which became probably the most successful web-based email service in the world. In 1999, MSN introduced MSN Messenger, and in 2000 MSN re-launched their web based feature with the similar format that we see today. By this time MSN lacked a main objective and its online services attracted only a fraction of traffic that AOL had.

In November 2006, MSN received 6.4% of all UK search traffic. On 15th August 2006, MSN and Microsoft launched adCenter in the UK in response Adwords and Overture to create paid search to utilize the share of UK search traffic. It works in the same way as Adwords, which ranks Sponsored Links ads according to the relevance of the Ads.

Since launching in the UK, we have seen major success by capturing the traffic and turning it into a high source of revenue for our clients.
